Midnights with the Mystic begins as an autobiographical telling of Cheryl Simone’s life, introducing the reader to the author and her quest for a deeper meaning and answers to life.
Cheryl was a seeker since her early childhood years and continued growing in her profound curiosity and quest for answers well throughout her teen years. As time progressed Cheryl’s life took on some very unexpected turns, from being clinically depressed to turning things around for herself with some successful business ventures. Yet decades later—despite a constant seeking and various meditation programs and retreats — Cheryl still had not found what she was looking for.
When it seemed she had most let go and surrendered, thanks to some timely synchronistic events, Cheryl is introduced to the work of, and then Sadhguru himself. Three years later, Cheryl has the incredible opportunity to host Sadhguru at her lake house for a week – and this is where an incredible journey begins.
Staying up to the early hours of the morning, Cheryl and Sadhguru exchange many dialogues, where Cheryl is able to ask Sadhguru her most pressing life questions. As Sadhguru answers and explains, both Cheryl and the reader’s life is jolted into a new dimension of being.
I know I have barely scratched the surface of who Sadhguru is and who I can become or what is possible for a person.

Topics discussed range from all aspects of love—whether there is such a thing as soul mates and purpose of relationships—to all aspects of life and death, including destiny, life calling, liberation and so much more!
Throughout this incredible dialogue, we also get an amazing glimpse and understanding of Sadhguru’s life, and past lives—helping us understand the being he is today and his purpose where all of us are concerned.
The moment you divide the world into right and wrong, into what is yours and not yours, into God and Devil, your love becomes very conditional.

We also get a glimpse into the incredible tool known as Isha Yoga (Divine Yoga), which is a technology or inner engineering that can not only bring us more peace, health and happiness, but completely transform our life as we know it, leading us further to full self-realization.
Reading Midnights with the Mystic felt like opening up a little gift, which just continues to offer more and more surprises as each page is turned. It starts off gently, with Cheryl’s life story, struggles and successes, up to the meeting with Sadhguru and his work. And then the reader is jolted into a completely new dimension of being when Cheryl begins her week long experience of hosting Sadhguru at her lake house.
Sadhguru is the embodiment of a true guru, and yet he is so real and so down to Earth. His wisdom is indescribable. Between a flawless and a most compassionate logic, I found his words penetrating deep within my mind, heart and soul. His life story is both fascinating and highly captivating. Without a doubt there is a mind-boggling aspect to it, however I feel it so much as real because I know it is meant to be that normal.
The more sincere you are with yourself, the clearer you will see things and the less melodrama you will add to things in order to make your life more intense and interesting.
Sadhguru, Midnights with the Mystic
Reading the book, I felt like I was truly there with Cheryl and Sadhguru by the lake, around a warm fire. Sadhguru’s energy is vividly felt every time he speaks.
I can so much relate to Cheryl on so many fronts, for example when she shares the following: I knew that my expectations were extremely high. I wanted enlightenment. I also laughed when I read that one of the first things Sadhguru said to Cheryl was that she was in danger of wasting her life to laziness and complacency. While I wouldn’t say that I am complacent these days, I related again to Cheryl when she shared that I only did what came easy to me, never challenging myself. It made me think about myself and my own life so much…how much do I challenge myself… and how much do I follow the path of least resistance.
I have no doubt that this book came to me not only for a very important reason, but also at the right time. After a very active seeking, awakening and transformation over a 3 year period, I came into a whole new energy in the last year. On one front things were changing rapidly for me, and on another they seemed to stagnate where they mattered most. For me, this book was nothing short of a gentle, yet firm reminder to remember what my purpose in this whole journey is. Yes, it is to wake up—which on many fronts I have—but that is only the beginning. Like Cheryl, I have searched and tried some spiritual outlets from a Darshan with Mother Meera to a 10 day silent Vipassana Meditation, just to name a few. As amazing experiences as each of these were, none of them yet, really “clicked” for me fully. So much of the spiritual and the metaphysical excites me, but I know today that the only reason it does so, and with such intensity, is because they all serve as markers along my path to remind me of my greater purpose here—and in this lifetime.
I want to feel liberation, complete liberation. I can sense it and taste it and feel it in my core. While my life flows so easily and effortlessly compared to that of many others, I do not want to stop there. Regardless of how far I get in this lifetime, my goal and my journey are towards full liberation and self-realization, and this book helped to remind me of that so much! However, I also know better not to push or force anything. I just need to be present and live the wisdom daily. With the right teachers, experiences and material coming from various directions, such as this book, I am reminded of my path and continue on it eagerly.
This is where this book was priceless for me, I too felt at home with Sadhguru. It is a definite fact, that yes, this book needs to be read several times, where each time a new revelation can surface. I also want to seriously pursue the Isha Yoga Inner Engineering courses and am excited after doing some research that I may have the chance to share in more of Sadhguru’s wisdom in person, when he comes to Toronto in May 2011. I am not looking for any particular outcome, just welcome the opportunity to continue on my journey.
It was crystal clear to me that my happiness was my sole responsibility. I did not need anyone else to make me happy; it was within me and me alone.
Cheryl Simone, Midnights with the Mystic
The book is true to its tag line – “A Little Guide to Freedom and Bliss”. It is just a glimpse into the wisdom that Sadhguru shares, but it is powerful nonetheless. The book is written in a most pleasant way and makes for a very easy read. Cheryl paints the backdrop of her life and the time with Sadhguru in a well expressed way, that makes the reader flow and follow easily from page to page.
Sadhguru does an exceptional job just being himself – the gift of wisdom that he is, sharing so freely on every and any topic Cheryl brings up. No topic is too big or too small, too silly or too profound.
Together, they create a wonderful dialogue to heighten our sense of awareness and encourage us to move beyond the limitations and boundaries of the illusions we think make up our life.
The one and only reason that you are unhappy is that life is not happening the way you think it should happen. If your happiness and your well-being are not subject to anybody or anything, only then you are free.
Sadhguru, Midnights with the Mystic
This is a book, I highly recommend for anyone to read who is searching for that certain “more” in life, regardless of their spiritual background. If you have questions about life, love, death and the whole human condition, Midnights with the Mystic can bring you a mystic right into your own home where you can begin to explore some of the answers for yourself. Aside from this book, you may also enjoy the follow-up film entitled Mystic Wisdom.
