In her story, Angela shares with us the importance of one extremely valuable tool for our life, which we all possess and have in common—our intuition. She shares her experience with it, what a difference understanding it made in her life and what it can also do for each of us.
My journey of awakening and personal expansion
I’ve been a spiritual seeker since I was a teenager. Looking back now I believe I sought “enlightenment” as a way to escape the pain of my childhood. I kept thinking that if I only “knew enough” or became a “self-realized soul” I’d be able to tolerate the home environment I was raised in.
I see now that these concepts were far too advanced for me to have understood at such a young age. I was not yet mature enough to internalize them and truly change or evolve. I am grateful though for the difficulties I faced growing up because without them I probably would not have been such a fervent spiritual seeker. I do believe the difficulties we face in life, and how we deal with them, shape who we become.
I’ve been focusing on developing more understanding, compassion and acceptance of others, and myself. I had great difficulty dealing with my emotions when I was younger. I learned very early to disconnect from my emotions to protect myself.
Mindfulness and meditation are the tools I’ve used to help me in my journey. In my late 20s and early 30s I was a meditation instructor which helped me to get over many of my earlier belief patterns. I’m now able to say that I’m getting better at accepting others as they are and at being able to maintain my own boundaries.
My Inspirations and Influences
I was drawn to explore metaphysics and spirituality because of the psychic experiences I had from a young age. I wanted answers and I wanted to know that I wasn’t crazy. No one would believe me in my family. I began reading Tarot when I was 11 and doing astrology charts when I was 12. Being made to feel that I was somehow not “normal” caused me to question my intuition for most of my life, and as a consequence I made many bad decisions that affected the direction I took.
As a teenager I was drawn to eastern philosophy and religion and began learning about reincarnation and karma. In my twenties I became interested in New Thought and began reading Ernest Holmes, Frances Scovel Shinn and Emmet Fox. Around this time I also took a Silva Mind Meditation course that changed my life. Silva is a dynamic meditation where you learn to use visualization to “correct” the things within yourself and your life that you wish to change.
In my late 20s I had another life altering experience. I took a Sahaja Yoga meditation class and eventually became an instructor. In Sahaja Yoga you learn to quiet the mind. It’s quite the opposite of Silva. With Sahaja I learned that aligning with the peace and stillness of Spirit within, created peace in my life on the outside. It was a truly profound experience to finally know what inner peace felt like. This is the method I use to meditate each day.
At present I am focused on listening to my intuition. I made a decision when I left my corporate job in 1995 that I would listen to it from that point forward. When I hit a low point financially I went running back into the finance field in 1999 instead of listening to my intuition and staying put. I’m now working toward leaving the corporate world again. My mission to teach others to listen to their intuition comes from my desire to help others avoid the same mistakes I’ve made when I’ve purposely ignored my intuition in life and ended up on the wrong path.
My Positive Life Changes
I’m so much more content with myself and my life now. I don’t expect perfection of myself or others like I did when I was younger. I feel I have more tolerance for people overall. I’m at peace and feel joy quite often for no reason. I’m also able to observe my emotions now rather than react which is so important to remaining calm and peaceful.
Now that I’ve been dedicating myself to honoring my intuition life has become full of wonderful coincidences. I feel like the Universe is shepherding me toward achieving my desires. I think when we’re on the right path the circumstances of our lives fall into place much more easily. I write more about this on my blog Powered By Intuition.
My Next Steps as an Evolving Being
I’ve always been a very driven person and serious student all my life. I can remember turning 13 and wishing I was turning 30 because I thought that perhaps by that time I’d “know” how to find inner peace and finally be happy. I laugh now when I think of this, but I really and truly believed it back then!
In the last couple years I’ve decided that I have to lighten up! It’s time to enjoy my life. Now that I have more of the inner balance I was so driven to attain I’m also free of the inner taskmaster that drove me so hard in the first place.
Lightening up allowed my mediumship abilities to resurface. I’d pushed them away when I was younger because I feared that others would perceive me as crazy, just as my family had. I’m so enjoying this aspect of my growth now.
I’ve just completed my first book and am working on editing now. I’d always written and had the desire to write a book, but each time I’d attempted it in the past I’d never been able to complete it. I think lightening and allowing myself to enjoy life more took the pressure off and my book finally came through.
I believe this is the time in my life when I’m going to be able to achieve my dreams of writing and doing readings full time. I’ve come to the conclusion that we’re not only here to grow and evolve spiritually by having this human experience, but we’re also here to enjoy the wonderful experience of being in human form too.
My Advice to Others
I want to tell others who may be struggling in life that constant struggle is a tell tale sign of not being aligned with your right purpose.
By learning to listen to your intuition you will not only discover your unique mission and passion, but live a happier, more meaningful, fulfilling and successful life. When you develop your intuition you’ll “know” if you’re on the right path or not. You’ll be led directly to what you were meant to do. Once you’re aligned with your true purpose, the path before you will become completely clear and your life will flow much more easily and effortlessly.
I found this out the hard way – by forcing myself to push a boulder up hill on the wrong path in life for many years. Now that I know, I feel I must shout this message out from my little soapbox whenever I get the opportunity. To me it was a revelation – perhaps it’s old news to a lot of people, but to me it was one of those break-out moments in life that shifted my thinking completely.
Learning to go within and not only listen, but trust my intuition, turned my life around and it can turn your life around too.
